Envirothon is an annual hands-on environmental education competition for high school students, designed to encourage team work, problem-solving skills, and public speaking skills while fostering an appreciation for current environmental issues. Often referred to as the “Environmental Olympics”, Envirothon combines the exhilaration of team competition, the challenge of learning about environmental issues, and the experience of using this knowledge in hands-on activities. This approach to environmental education helps students to develop skills necessary to address environmental issues, such as team work, problem-solving, critical thinking, and public debate.
TMCD promotes the Manitoba Envirothon to Schools in the District as well as supporting participating Envirothon teams with the funding assistance from the TMCD Education Grant.
TMCD staff are available by request to visit the classroom and speak on a number of conservation related topics.
The Turtle Mountain Conservation District in partnership with the Assiniboine Hills and West Souris River Conservation Districts hold the Annual Southwest Manitoba Water Festival in Souris MB each September.
The goal of the Water Festival is “to educate and engage youth in the importance of healthy watersheds”. There are a number of water related activities based on the Grade 5 and 6 curriculums.
The Water Festival engages and educates students on water, fish and aquatic ecosystems which gives the students a greater awareness and encourages them to become good stewards of these resources and relay this message to other individuals.
Each year the Conservation District selects a family or a group to acknowledge those who demonstrate positive conservation principles and have undertaken conservation efforts over a number of years that have shown long-term benefits for the natural environment and society.
This year’s recipient for the 2011 TMCD Conservation Award is Lloyd, Leanne Bugg & Family for demonstrating sound conservation practices on Sleepy Creek Farm.
